Each year, up to 20% of people get the flu. Here’s how to protect yourself and lower your risk of serious illness:
Recognize Symptoms: Flu often starts 1-4 days after infection with symptoms like fever, cough, body aches and fatigue. If you have a chronic condition (like asthma), symptoms may be worse.
Know Contagion Risks: You’re contagious a day before symptoms appear and up to a week after. Stay home until you’ve been fever-free for 24 hours without medication.
Get Vaccinated: An annual flu shot is your best defense and can lessen symptoms if you do get sick.
Limit Exposure: Avoid touching your face, cover coughs, wash hands often and disinfect surfaces. Don’t share towels, food or utensils.
