With Halloween and the holiday season fast approaching, cybercriminals are aiming to "trick" unsuspecting victims with their latest scams. From election-related fraud to payment app scams, it’s important to stay vigilant. Here are some spooky threats to be aware of: 

1. Election-Related Scams (2024 Presidential Election)With the 2024 election culminating, lookout for "phishy" emails and social media posts that claim to offer voting updates, results or donation requests. Always get your news from reputable sources and beware of "scare tactics" aimed at getting you to share personal info.

1. P2P Payment App ScamsScammers love targeting peer-to-peer (P2P) payment apps like Venmo, CashApp and Zelle. Remember, if an offer seems too good to be true, it’s probably a trick! Always double-check who you’re sending money to—these transactions can disappear faster than a ghost once they’re gone.

2. QR Code ScamsCybercriminals are exploiting QR codes’ popularity, especially during the holiday season when people commonly scan them for discounts, event details and promotions. These scams involve replacing legitimate QR codes with malicious ones that lead unsuspecting victims to menacing websites designed to steal money, personal information or install malware.

General Cyber Hygiene Tips 

• Watch out for phishing attacks disguised as election surveys, payment app support or Holiday deals.

• Use strong passwords and enable MFA—don’t let hackers in through the "creaky doors" of your accounts.

• Keep your devices updated so you don’t have any "unwanted visitors" (malware) lurking in your system.

• Mobile App Privacy - Many apps ask for permissions they don't need—like access to your contacts or location. Don't let them treat themselves to your private data! Stick to trusted apps, and only grant the minimum access needed.
